GERD and chest pain: Heartburn or heart attack?

The GI doctor I saw prescribed two different medications. I was having bad reaction to the medicine and felt the only thing the GI doctor was doing was medicating me.

He suggested it was a Hiatal hernia, and advised me to lose weight round my waist. However I tried antacids as a short term fix which helped immediately. Like others I had stomach ache as a child, heartburn in pregnancy and a ‘delicate stomach’ thereafter.

can check for problems in your esophagus or stomach. This test involves inserting a long, flexible, lighted tube with a camera down your throat. First, the doctor will spray the back of your throat with anesthetic and give you a sedative to make you more comfortable. pH monitoring can check for acid in your esophagus.

Much better! At menopause I started to get constant indigestion, and have just started on a proton pump inhibitor. I know this is supposed to be courageous stories and I am doing my best to be brave. Until I get a diagnosis I have resolved to be calm, patient, keep a positive mental attitude and distract myself with pleasant activities whenever I can. I am in the fortunate position of not having to care for anyone else and I do appreciate the fact that my time is my own.

My grandmother died from cancer of the esophagus, which is what can happen when you have constant heartburn. I am hoping that the doctor will do surgery.

I wish I could get some independent advice on this. One common cause of acid reflux disease is a stomach abnormality called a hiatal hernia. This occurs when the upper part of the stomach and LES move above the diaphragm, a muscle that separates your stomach from your chest. Normally, the diaphragm helps keep acid in our stomach. But if you have a hiatal hernia, acid can move up into your esophagus and cause symptoms of acid reflux disease.

Symptoms of heart disease include chest pain and shortness of breath. Explore heart disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. A heart attack often is a sudden and sometimes fatal occurrence of coronary thrombosis (coronary artery blockage) that frequently produces chest pain and/or additional pain that may radiate to the neck, jaw, and/or arms. Heart attacks involve the heart and not the esophagus or acid regurgitation.

When I finished the course of 7 days I had a strange feeling in my stomach. After 3 weeks I began feeling stomach pain like squeezing, in the morning for 30 minutes and the pain goes away. I went to my surgeon and he told me he suspects that I have hiatal hernia and told me to do endoscopy test.

Inflammation there might be due to acid reflux (gastrooesophageal reflux disease, or Gord), ulcers, the effects of drugs (such as ibuprofen), bacterial infection (by HP, for example) or, rarely, a cancer. The tests will include a blood test for anaemia, stool test for HP and referral for endoscopy for a direct view. You’re more likely to have them if you’re over 50, or have developed persistent indigestion recently that is getting worse. A specific cause is rarely found, even if you have a tube threaded down your throat and into your stomach (an endoscopy) to have a good look around.

Over time, it can also change the cells of esphagus and cause cancer (Barrett’s esophagus). Lots of people are intimately familiar with acid reflux symptoms.

Print this and take this with you to your next doctor’s appointment to discuss possible causes of heartburn you may be experiencing. GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease) can be considered a chronic and more serious form of reflux with heartburn as the major symptom; however, there may be other symptoms or no symptoms at all. Bile and stomach acid can reflux into the esophagus when another muscular valve, the lower esophageal sphincter, malfunctions. The lower esophageal sphincter separates the esophagus and stomach. The valve normally opens just long enough to allow food to pass into the stomach.

Food poisoning

That was very painful when I got up or sat down. Not too much other pain at all.

It’s a widely used treatment for indigestion and heartburn and acid reflux. It’s also taken to prevent and treat stomach ulcers.
